Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind

I’m just gonna share a few quotes out of a book on Zen meditation and practice i randomly picked up off the book sale a the library a while ago, that I’m now finally getting to reading.

When we become truly ourselves, we just become a swinging door, and we are purely independent of, and at the same time, dependent upon everything. p. 31

The true purpose is to see things as they are, to observe things as they are, and to let everything go as it goes. p. 33

As long as you have rules, you have a chance for freedom.

…do not try to stop your thinking. Let it stop by itself. p. 34

As you see I haven’t gotten far…and books like these are hard to read for me. Anything that is remotely religious or doctrinal or belief orientated I try and have an open mind to, but at the same time be skeptical. Hopefully I can draw something from these writings.

I feel like i grab the concepts pretty well and digest them, and assimilate them if I need to. They will have meaning or they will not. I particularly like the one about freedom and rules. I have been thinking a lot about the whole open source, creative commons, copyright, piracy, general public license, patents, floating around these days.

I have no idea where it will end up or where I want it to. I think pondering that quote will give us some kind of answer. Rules and freedom exist depedent and independent of each other. Very interesting…

Maybe I have the right, freedom to choose the source of my content and rules are there to help me be able to have a choice in the first place…I don’t know. Maybe my thoughts will grow flesh.
